History and origins
The G-Class began as a military and off-road project. Wikipedia notes it was developed from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran, and Mercedes-Benz worked with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz.
The first W460 body styles included two-door cab chassis, short-wheelbase wagons and vans, and long-wheelbase three- and five-door wagons. A Popemobile based on a 230 G cabriolet followed in 1980.
W460 vs W461 vs W463
- W460 (1979 to 1991): the original range, used by civilians and the military.
- W461 (from 1992): the utilitarian version, with a plainer cabin and military variants.
- W463 (from 1990): the more upmarket civilian version that became the luxury G-Wagen.
Old G Wagon engines and specs
Reference figures for the 1979 engines are modest by today’s standards:
- 230 G: about 90 to 102 PS, depending on the version.
- 240 GD: about 72 PS (diesel).
- 280 GE: about 156 PS.
- 300 GD: about 88 PS (diesel).
The G 500, introduced in 1998, added a 5.0 L V8 with about 292 to 296 hp. For something much more extreme, see our guide to the Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6.
Why old G-Wagons still have fans
The mix of body-on-frame strength, locking differentials and boxy styling makes the old G-Wagon a lasting off-road favourite. Over time the model moved from a working vehicle to a luxury SUV without changing its basic shape.

Buying an old G-Wagon in Canada
- Mercedes-Benz did not officially export the W460 to the US, and official US sales began in 2002. In Canada, check import rules and provincial inspection requirements first.
- Inspect the frame, floors, sills and door bottoms for rust.
- Check the maintenance history, and be wary of cars that have been heavily modified.
- Prices vary widely by condition, engine and market, so compare current listings.
